Tenrecidae = The Tenrec Family

[streaked tenrecs]

These small mammals live only on the African mainland and the island of Madagascar.
The 34 species of tenrec range in size from a body length of less than two inches — to over fifteen inches long!

[Gewone tenrek]

Some tenrecs look like shrews, others like otters or even little pigs!
Tenrecs can live a life in the trees, other species on the forest floor, and others in the water.

[common tenrecs]

One species of tenrec, the lesser hedgehog tenrec, is sometimes kept as a family pet.
They are also being bred for use in biomedical laboratory studies.
